The Beni Ourain rug is characterized by its unique blend of artful minimalism and hand crafted detail. Le Corbusier, Arne Jacobsen, Alvar Aalto, and Marcel Breuer all used the iconic Beni Ourain in their interiors, inspired by the counterbalance of graphic pattern play that gives a sense of both austerity and inventiveness. The talismanic rugs from the Beni Ourain people of the Middle Atlas Mountains (and Azilal in the Rif Mountains) are among the most prized by the modernists of the 20th century.
Born in the Atlas Mountains to nomadic shepherds, the Beni Ourain rug seems to defy order while at the same time celebrating it. Line and form come together in repeating patterns, only to then unravel into negative space. The Beni Ourain is defined by its softness and by its sense of restraint. All of this is no surprise considering the worldview of a mountain shepherd. The Beni Ourain woman expresses the emotions of her inner and outer world on a field of cream, with detail in delicate lines of henna brown and dark sable. She is inspired by the snowy, rocky fields and mountain streams that characterize her landscape. The immediacy and sincerity of design are what make the Beni Ourain such an art to behold. The Beni Ourain rug is as much as a story about grand nature as it is a story about a people whose traditions are older than Morocco itself.
The size and orientation of a rug should serve the purpose of making a room feel connected. Larger rooms have different needs than small ones. Proper scale requires a rug to extend away from the furniture at least six inches on each side. When selecting size, keep in mind an ideal space of at least eighteen inches of bare floor on all sides. Some designers recommend that all furniture sits on the rug. Others will say that all furniture except the coffee table should be entirely off the rug.

The Gardener’s House was born of a profound respect for sumptuous and vibrant nature -  for travel, architecture, literature, and art. We are a luxury brand for the taste-maker. We have a penchant for contrasting raw and refined elegance, for blending sophistication and spontaneity. We believe history and nature are the best designers. And we think interiors that play with culture, and with raw, natural beauty are the most beautiful. Our admiration of the modern art masters has inspired us to choose sinuous contours and intense line drama to express the joy and serenity inspired by grand nature. An appreciation of the depth and mystery of the garden is at the heart of everything we do. It is the foundation of our hand selected vintage collections, and of every canvas we create.
