The Beni Mguild rug is the soul child of a Moroccan Berber woman, and the progeny of a living, breathing culture, not a static one. The Beni Mguild style of Moroccan rugs is a technique passed down from generation to generation by the nomadic tribe living in the Atlas mountains. In the celebration of a tradition, a woman of the tribe would have used shapes and symbols to tell a story that had meaning to her people. Although the designs of each Beni Mguild appear spontaneous, the symbols have specific intention. They are part of a story-telling tradition that has been performed over centuries.
Every change in the pattern of a rug represents a change in the life of the weaver, or her tribe. Often, the patterns are energetic and optimistic. They represent life events such as births, deaths, marriages, and other important events. In the language of Berber symbols, straight lines or squares represent men, and more rounded shapes or curvy lines represent women. Happiness is often expressed using the star symbol, and concentric diamonds have been used to denote protection or the hope of prosperity for the weaver's family, or the tribe in general.
The Beni Mguild rug has been the durable and utilitarian method of the Berber tribes for creating warmth and comfort since at least the 6th century AD. The rugs have been used as bedding, as horse blankets, and as tent walls and flooring. Moroccan rugs are versatile, functional creations that have been considered luxuries by nomadic shepherds, who historically have lived year round in the outdoors, open to the elements — the cold mountain air or the hot desert sun.
The Moroccan Beni Mguild is a must in any modern home, a unique work of art for the interior designer or serious collector, and a conversation starter that gives a sense of personality and character to any room it is placed in. A rug that is saturated with color lends a casual and relaxed atmosphere to a room. It elevates style, adding richness, and is complimentary to many different styles of modern design. These stunning rugs can be beautiful center pieces, grounding the room and bringing in the sophistication and statement, and even the joy.
WHAT SIZE RUG?
The size and orientation of a rug should serve the purpose of making a room feel connected. Larger rooms have different needs than small ones. Proper scale requires a rug to extend away from the furniture at least six inches on each side. When selecting size, keep in mind an ideal space of at least eighteen inches of bare floor on all sides. Some designers recommend that all furniture sits on the rug. Others will say that all furniture except the coffee table should be entirely off the rug.
The Gardener’s House was born of a profound respect for sumptuous and vibrant nature - for travel, architecture, literature, and art. We are a luxury brand for the taste-maker. We have a penchant for contrasting raw and refined elegance, for blending sophistication and spontaneity. We believe history and nature are the best designers. And we think interiors that play with culture, and with raw, natural beauty are the most beautiful. Our admiration of the modern art masters has inspired us to choose sinuous contours and intense line drama to express the joy and serenity inspired by grand nature. An appreciation of the depth and mystery of the garden is at the heart of everything we do. It is the foundation of our hand selected vintage collections, and of every canvas we create.
